Exhaustion

I’m calling time on myself

angel wing

December is a truly sh*tty time of year for me.  The loss of both my parents within a week of Christmas a few years apart has made it almost impossible to face the Season.  Having said that, each year I have gamely approached December telling myself that ‘it’s going to be different’.  Problem is, however, the losses live so deeply in my psyche that just when I think I’m in the Christmas groove, I hit the scratch in the record!  (Now that shows you how old I am!).

Last year I declared (mainly to myself) that I wasn’t going through it another year.  I was not going to work in December, just focus on taking care of myself and getting through.  What is that saying about the ‘best laid plans’?  So this year what do I find myself doing?  You got it, working like a crazy lady!

Till last night when I found myself thinking “this is nuts!”  (and variations on that theme!)  I decided today with the complete agreement of Dr B (the other Burnout Queen) that all bets were off…and so were all deadlines!

I’m done.  Well, until the New Year.  I am going to rest, relax, and even embrace the Christmas Spirit with my niece and her family who are arriving from Canada to spend the Holidays.  This surprise visit has us over the moon!  It’s been quite a few years since we have felt the warmth of family.

There will be a few more things in the pipeline up to the end of the year.  Thank goodness for being organised.  But for the most part I’m backing away from the computer, away from the deadlines, away from all the worrying and researching.  For the next couple of weeks it is going to be way more likely to find me baking!  (Yeah, my soul is dancing!)

Then look out 2015!  Have we got plans for you: they are still cooking but they are going to be great.

Day 8:  Are You Feeling Like The Grinch?

Oh, go on forget all the chores, forget your Absolute Musts, and certainly forget all the things you think you ‘should be doing’.  In fact, forget being an adult for a bit and look for the simple fun.

Burst out in holiday carols, gasp with delight over holiday lights, munch away on a candy cane, make snow angel (or maybe a fort to hide from it all!), shake the presents, bite the head off that chocolate snowman!  Take one kid-like break each day of the holidays.

Keep playing!

Christmas at The Burnout Queens HQ

xmas plantingIt’s beginning to take on that festive feeling here at The Burnout Queens headquarters!  We’ve kept the colour theme and planting these at the entranceway.  Should look welcoming to our visitors, friends and family.  I think the other biz neighbours will love it as well.  (oh and just ignore the sunshine…we’re hoping for more white stuff closer to the time).

What does your headquarters look like?!  Don’t be shy-share.

Day 7:  Don’t Hold Your Breath, It Will Be Over Soon!

Oh, that was close!  You could expire that way.  Not before the prezzies!

Instead of holding your breath, how about decreasing your stress by watching your breath.  It’s that simple.  Just sit down, close your eyes, and ‘watch’ your breath as you inhale and exhale.  Try this tiny little stress reliever right now.  In and out, in and out…imagine your breath like a coloured mist…in and out.  After a couple of minutes, open your eyes and notice how bright everything looks.

Give yourself the biggest gift of all, calmness.

Day 6:  Ready To Bolt For The Airport?

Take a mental vacation and daydream about your favourite holiday spot.  Better yet, dig out a photo of your favourite relaxing place ~ the lake, beach, mountains, shopping mall ~ keep it close at hand.

When you feel your holiday blood pressure rising, take 2-3 minutes and just gaze at your photo ~ close your eyes and imagine all the sites, sounds, sensations and smells.  Repeat as needed.  There is no such thing as too much vacation time!

May visions of sugar plums, or palm trees, dance in your head!
