Exhaustion

The 50+ woman’s burnout

Burnout in the mature years

Everybody can learn from this but a special ‘heads up’ to those of you who are 50+!  You see, 50 plus often means 50+ and fried.  Burnout doesn’t stop with, shall we say, maturity.  Unfortunately it can hound us into our ‘wisdom years’.  Here’s why…

One of our main talking points has always been the idea that as women we were Raised and Trained to burnout.  Now this concept has been known to raise a few hackles.  Mum’s in the audience thought they were getting the ‘mum blame’ thing again and women are sensitive about any criticism of their own mums.  That is not our intent.  However, we do want you to understand that we are all products of our generations.

Now if you are 50+ you may not be an actual Boomer but you were most likely raised by one.  FYI: First wave 1946-1955; second wave 1956-1964.

The Boomer generation experienced a huge cultural shift mid-generation.  I think of the divide as the ‘Elvis boomers vs the Beatles boomers’!  What didn’t change, however, were the unspoken rules and hidden values that defined women.  Here’s where we got caught up in the burnout trap.

Women of ‘boomer parenting’ or being boomers themselves were raised to never need anyone, to not ask for help, to never admit even needing help, or to talk about difficulties or problems.  Life was kept private.  You weren’t ‘allowed’ to talk about medical/physical issues (including sex), finances, politics or religion.  We were raised to be ‘ladies’.  So even if you were breaking inside you smiled and summed up your status with these two simple words, “I’M FINE”!

When feminism took root again in the second wave of the boomer generation (1956-1964) not needing help was seen as a badge of merit.  Handling life on your own was to be proud of, admired and screamed independence to the world.  It didn’t matter though because even though society was changing, the woman’s role was still about looking after everybody else.  The inner conflicts kept increasing.

You can see where this is heading.  We became people pleasers, had frightful difficulty saying ‘No’ and was always the one being called upon to help.  Being a girl still meant standing in the background, being subservient, taking care of everybody, not asserting your own beliefs or values and doing it all with a smile ‘cause after all ‘you were fine’!

But we weren’t ok.  We were becoming discouraged, disappointed with life, disillusioned and, let’s not forget, exhausted.  A big gap started developing between who we really were and what we really wanted, what we were feeling and thinking and who we were told we ‘should’ be just ‘cause we were girls.  We call that the Reality Gap and it is in this gap that burnout finds its roots.  We learned it from our mums, they learned it from their mums and on and on it was passed down, and dare I say it, still is.

Burnout in the 50+ club of women is now rampant.  They have taken care of everyone in their lives and many still are.  They have raised kids and now many raise grand-kids, most of their adult lives they have worked outside of the home and many still are. (Let’s not forget all the work that happens inside the home and always has!) They have been the dutiful caring daughters, and many still are as they add elder care to their portfolio.  We musn’t forget that this age group of women were also being affected by the culture shift embodied by the boomer generation and that meant many remained single, chose not to have children, divorced (did you know that Boomers have the highest divorce rate?), and that means they learned to do everything by themselves without (you got it) asking for help!  That spells one thing, exhaustion.  That spells burnout.

So if this has resonated with you stay tuned because we will be talking a lot more about being 50+ and fried.  We hear you, we get you.

With love,  Dr Toby & Dr Bev (aka THEBURNOUTQUEENS)

On the other side of Burnout

We want you to think and dream about the other side of burnout.  Even though we talk about how Bliss can be yours after burnout, let’s be clear…Bliss doesn’t mean…

  • sitting on a beach with a fancy drink
  • a remote island where you meditate all day long
  • that enlightenment is just around the corner

And it certainly doesn’t mean that life can’t catch up with you and bite you in the… well you know!

Life is never a straight line, it’s more of a spiral path.  There will always be ups and downs, new surprises and discoveries, and, of course decisions and problems to solve.

But with each step you take, each level you transcend you will have discovered how strong you are and how resilient you are.  Even more than that, you will know what’s right for you and what’s wrong.  You won’t be afraid to leave something behind in pursuit of something new.  One step at a time, and you own each and every amazing step.  You will believe in your path, YOUR path, down to your very gut.

On the other side of Burnout you will live life your way because, believe it or not, Burnout leads you closer to the real, true YOU.

Embrace Life!

Too Exhausted for a Life Vision…think again!

Seeking the Big Picture | Life Vision Means Living Burnout Free

The Burnout Queens know that most of our Highly Sensitive Women are tired, frazzled and pulled in every direction in their everyday lives.  So to suggest one more thing for them to pack into their lives seems cruel.  But…

A Life Vision is just what these doctors order for frazzled, fried and burned out women.  We know that on any given day, plans can get interrupted, postponed and forgotten in all the details of ‘being and doing’ for everyone.  THAT is precisely why having a Life Vision is so very important to cultivate at different stages of your life.  When it all goes sideways, isn’t it better to be able to go back to the drawing board and know you have already drawn something to follow?  When the chaos and busyness drop off, you can reconnect with yourself quickly and without much struggle.

Quickly and without struggle.  Foreign words to busy women, but they can exist.

On our previous blog (Do You Have a Life Vision)  we outlined two of our Ideas about Life Visioning to help you get started and not become overwhelmed.   Today we’re offering another two for your consideration.

The Burnout Queens want you to stop struggling and actually think about what it is you want in your life.  It’s easier to plan and achieve once the vision (the big picture) is clear.  So try these:

Idea:  Vision is different than purpose.  However, the dreams you have for your life can reveal your purpose to you.  Your life purpose is embedded in your life vision at the age of 12 or 20 or 50 or 80 or…

Idea:  Dreams come from the realm of “what if” and having a vision or a dream requires truthfulness about who you are and what you want.  Truthfulness in your vision does not have to lead to limitation.  Vision is expansive, illusion is limiting.  Vision lends itself to plans and goals, illusion is a dead end.

Come on Darling.  Start dreaming and achieving a life you want to live for yourself.  I bet you do it all the time for your family, your friends, your colleagues.  It’s time for you to get the big picture for your life and step in!

Do You Have a Vision of Your Life?

“Without a life vision, you are adrift at sea, shifting directions as the weather changes, and hoping and wishing you will land somewhere tropical with drinks sporting little umbrellas!”

If this sounds like you, you need to read our Feature Article of March 11 (Seeking the Big Picture | Life Vision Means Living Burnout Free )  https://theburnoutqueens.com/seeking-big-picture-life-vision-means-living-burnout-free).  We’ll help you take the exhaustion and guesswork out of trying to cultivate a life vision all on your own.

We have Four Ideas about Life Visioning to help you stay motivated instead of overwhelmed.  Consider them as you approach the process of defining your Life Vision.

And word to the wise:  Don’t make this difficult!  Just start wondering and thinking for now.

Idea: You need an idea of your destination. You do not have to know the actual end point. You do not need to know all the stops along the way in order to move forward. You need the dream, you need the will, and you need faith.

Idea: The life vision you have can, and probably will, change with your life stages. What you dreamt about having or achieving in your life from the vantage point of your early 20s may be very different than the life vision you have from the viewpoint of your 40s. Neither were off track.

Of course, we have two other ideas for your life vision that may help keep you on track with dreaming about what you want for your life.  They are in our Part 2 post tomorrow.
