Highly Sensitive Woman

The experience of living as a highly sensitive woman in a noisy, busy and unrelenting world

Hello from Brighton & London!: 3 December 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

I cannot believe that I am writing the last issue of ‘Hello’ for 2016!   We’ll be showing you all the Christmas pics and news in early January.  This issue is about a birthday, new seaside and seasonal traditions, before Christmas chaos descends.  Perhaps our way of approaching the holidays will inspire you to introduce new traditions as well.

November started with a birthday for the eldest Burnout Pup.  His 7th year and he’s as quirky as ever (maybe more so) and he’s learned to expect a present or two and a sweet (although we enjoy more of the sweet than he does).

Seaside is about  Street style.  Everything from tiny burger joints to bold edgy street art.  You are never stuck for something different and quirky to look at.  And that’s exactly what happens after our Friday doughnut days and Sunday pancake breakfasts (new traditions).

Our new holiday traditions are about avoiding the stress and chaos of gift-giving and focusing on enjoying the holiday decorations.  What better place to start than a day of ‘no-to-low-cost’ browsing in London (is there anywhere else at holiday time).  Chelsea Christmas Craft Fayre at the Chelsea Physic Garden is a ‘must see’ not only for the beautiful crafts (no toilet paper doilies or knitted finger puppets here) but the gardens themselves as they winter-over.   Sorry no pics we were busy buying chocolates and winter scarves for ourselves (new tradition)!

It is still a ‘pinch me’ moment enjoying Chelsea pre-christmas.   We  browsed the shops on King’s Road (pinch me), had tea in the patisserie we love (pinch me) saw the new hanging lights at Peter Jones that can be dizzying and finished up in Sloane Square (okay really pinch me).  Then it was a quick walk along a street of architecturally beautiful homes we adore before catching the train home (did we spot Nigella?).

The month ended with the youngest Burnout Pup having an emergency vet visit, a few sick days before getting back to her adorable self.

And then there are the traditional daily walks that have changed with the season.  Now the leaves are on the ground instead of in the beautiful 300 year old trees (yes you heard that right…300 years) but still as welcoming and peaceful as ever.

On the work front The Burnout Queens are catching up on projects that got sidelined for launches, puppy nursing and just plain old time off for good behaviour (the beauty of working for yourself…whatever reason seems reasonable)!

Our holiday break is fast approaching and we’ll be busy in a quirky kind of way.  The new tradition is a1000 piece puzzle to get OCD over (believe me it happens, even the petsitter can’t help herself!), a good evening of watching telly for all the Christmas Specials, some fabulous chocolate delights thanks to our Chelsea Christmas trip, and some reading for pleasure.  As always there will be the tree, the dinner, and a quick Santa visit  added to the mix.  But you will see us again just before we break.

Until next time, have a fabulously delicious month!

Love,

Quiet the Buzz of Everyday Life…
creating calm for the Highly Sensitive Woman.

This is our personal answer to inner calm in a buzzing world. We learned by trial and error how to keep madness, trauma and stress at bay in an everyday kind of way, and it worked extremely well, so of course we wanted to share how we did it with all of you.

Who doesn’t want some peace and quiet nowadays?  These mini-audios and videos (21 in all) show you a variety of ways to enjoy and benefit from physical relaxation, breath awareness, mindfulness and even some mini meditations.  Little and often is our philosophy.

It’s quick, it’s easy, it works, and best of all, it doesn’t break the budget.  Your best buy at £27.99 for everything (or £22.99 if you are a member of The Realm!).

Clapping on the Off-Beat? | Being Highly Sensitive & Feeling Out-of-Sync

boq-out-of-sync600

Do you sometimes feel like you are the only one in the audience clapping on the off-beat or swaying in the ‘wrong’ direction for the ballad?  Well, for many Highly Sensitive women (HSWs) feeling ‘off-beat’ is pretty common.

As an HSW myself, I have, through the majority of my life, often wondered if everyone else had received the ‘right’ sheet music except me!  I have definitely spent most of my life humming my own hit-parade.  I solemnly believe,

It’s not always easy being out-of-sync, but it is definitely more interesting!

Of course off-time, out-of-sync, or off-beat experiences can present unique challenges, like some of these adventures:

  • returning to school later in life at a time where wearing the uniform might earn you a place on a questionnable website,
  • changing careers when you are ‘supposed’ to be grown-up & settled,
  • being 60 and not having any pictures to play ‘grandchild bingo’ with,
  • proudly having chosen to remain eternally single,
  • having by-passed the child road altogether,
  • hitting your fame and fortune in your 60s (take your bow darling!)
  • laughing off the idea of retirement at any age,
  • becoming a mum in your 40s or even 50s,
  • having elderly parent-care duties before you were ready,
  • returning to the dating scene at a more ‘mature’ age,
  • dating someone much younger (you go girl!)

Yes, a few challenges for sure, but the majority of our angst about feeling different comes from cultural attitudes and beliefs about everything having a ‘right time’ in life.  This is where burnout comes into play.  Some of us spend years trying to get on the right foot, hit the right note, or sing with the chorus mainly to please other people.  I hear the 4Ds of burnout calling; disappointment, discouragement, disillusionment, and ultimately disheartenment.  If there is a ‘right’ time to do something, that time could be right now!

Throw out the rule book because that attitude of needing to do things at the right time, in the right way or at the right age is just sooo old!  These days…

You choose the rhythm for your life, and then you get to dance!

The BOQs  believe it’s always the ‘right time’.  If you decide to believe, you can never be off-time or off-beat.  You are always exactly where you are meant to be.  Your life is never on a detour, you just need to follow the road signs of passion and joy.  So regardless of a few raised eyebrows, we just know…

You wouldn’t be your fabulous self if you hadn’t lived a little ‘off-beat’.

Now having your own unique life-rhythm certainly calls for embracing every fabulous highly sensitive molecule of your being.  Who cares if you are occasionally or always out-of-sync with the masses.  You, my dear, were never designed to be one of the masses!   You were designed to defy ordinary.  You are a Burnout Queen.

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx
