HSPs are a little like Donny & Marie!

Remember that song, “A little bit country/A little bit rock ‘n roll” (Has the earth stopped spinning ‘cause I never thought I’d be quoting Donny & Marie!). Well just so happens these lyrics capture the dilemma many HSPs find themselves in when trying to pin down their style of living or design an environment that captures everything that they want and who they are.

We constantly hear, “I should make up my mind, I need to decide, I must have a ‘split personality’, I always want what I can’t have!” (Or variations on those themes!) Well we just don’t see it that way! In fact, this kind of duality very much informed our latest move from London to the seaside city of Brighton (frequently referred to as London by the sea). We say…

Don’t ignore your complexity, push your desires aside or question your unique diversity…embrace it all!
Think mix-and-match!

Really…is it possible? You bet! You do have to know who you are, what you want, what creates a buzz for you, what chills you out… then you have to believe, be bold and be brave! And when you do you will find an equilibrium at the intersection of the duality that appeals to your own unique temperament.

Personally, we could never tire of London (have you heard the saying by Samuel Johnson ‘to be tired of London is to be tired of life’?). However, as much as we love the energy of the city, it can also be exhausting. We really thought we had found that ‘intersection of duality’ in our North London urban village, but ‘city creep’ was happening: the traffic was worsening, noise, pollution and crime in the area were increasing and people were becoming more stressed, angry and unfriendly! We had waited years to live in this city but it was time to move on; we just knew it in our gut! (You know when you live mindfully as an HSP intuition and your gut rarely steer you wrong.)

We were looking for a peaceful, practical way of living but one that is flush with style, vibrancy and energy! Could it be done? Sure but you have to know what you want, what you need, where you are willing to add or subtract (reject the word compromise, otherwise known as ‘settle’), which all adds up to allowing the unexpected while grounding yourself in the expected.

What we wanted was a little urban/a little village, a little luxurious/with a little simplicity, elegant but quirky and lots of creativity with a balance of practicality. Instead of opting for another neighbourhood or suburb of London we chose a new city just a 50 minute rail commute from London. A seaside city that is cool, quirky, buzzy (oh can it be buzzy), creative, friendly, architecturally beautiful and of course…SEASIDE!

Daily life in a fabulous place with London as our nearby playground! We have the sea (complete with fabulous views from the new place), beautiful parks, a meditation centre set in gorgeous gardens at the top of the street, cafes and tea shops galore, shopping is around the corner and can be as creative as you want given all the artists and entrepreneurs that live here. It has this amazing combination of regal and vintage, elegance and camp! Notice that word ‘compromise’has drifted into oblivion.

Many HSPs are confounded by their style of living dilemma. Many of us are in fact “a little bit country/a little bit rock’n roll”! Go ahead, try it, play with the idea of a ‘mix-and-match lifestyle’. Figure out what you know and what you expect and then add a heaping dose of the unexpected!

The life you imagine is the life you CAN live!

It’s time for you to defy ordinary… to live, love and express all that fabulous uniqueness that spells Y*O*U!

Here’s one great tip:

Colour outside the lines…don’t even use a piece of paper, choose a blank wall! Then get sticky-notes (why didn’t we buy shares, groan!), 2 differing styles ‘cause this is about embracing your duality: leopard print for the bold you and lilac ones for the ‘meditative’ you.

One desire, want or need to a sticky. For example: great cafes, art galleries, nature walks, good transportation, …be really creative/be really practical, just don’t censor yourself!

Let your style emerge. Whether you are re-styling your career, apartment, or total environment, this is a great tool to begin living at the intersection of your duality.

Hello from Brighton & London!

hello-london-brighton

Well, it’s been a month! The month we moved from London to Brighton. We wish we could say that it’s all been sun and fun but it’s been anything but. Change can definitely be chaotic. You know us, we believe that change is good, but chaos…well it’s just chaos! We are talking one solid month of builders in the flat almost every day making it impossible to settle in let alone unpack and get back to work! The pups thought it was great to have 5 new playmates every day!

We have put into practice every stress trick in the book, all the ones we share with you. Guess it worked since everyone involved has been amazed at how calm and reasonable we have continued to be. It is true, we have not yet thrown anyone off the terrace!

St-Anne-Wells-Gardens-park300Disappointingly there hasn’t been much time to get out and explore like we were looking forward to, but here are a few pics of our new neighbourhood.

The pups love their new park and they love sniffing around in the garden at the Buddhist meditation centre right at the top of our street, we are talking chilled pups…Ommmmm.

You know us, from a moment of reflection to a moment of indulgence just down the street! Oh be still my heart.

The neighbourhood is quirky, elegant, interesting and full of lovely cafes and shops. Here is one of the beautiful squares just a 5 minute walk away. The architecture here is beautiful.

And the sea…well the views still takes us aback! We delightfully have sea views from every room in the flat. Now who could ask for more! We reinstated our Sunday morning ritual of breakfast out and headed towards the sea to experience the “brisk” winds and waves crashing. We had a few chuckles as the wind almost took us off our feet! We stopped all of a few seconds to snap this before a quick (helped by the tail wind!) retreat indoors! It doesn’t do it justice so we will have to practice our sea shots!

Back at the flat, we needed some art…pop art! We had to improvise. Who knows, next stop Serpentine Gallery!

So, finally after a crazy month both boxes and builders are gone and we can breathe again. We can’t wait to share with you all that can be discovered when you grab life by the crown!
