Hello from Brighton & London!: 6 August 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Well Darlings, July came and went without any fuss or bother!   Really, the Burnout Queens’ usual trips were cancelled due to the train strikes, slowdowns, overcrowding, and track fires!   So we stayed seaside.

pic-1-seaside

Although we love the ‘buzz’ of London, staying local and low-key nurtures the quiet-seeking side of our Highly Sensitive souls.

We’ve been keeping our noses deep down in work all month, so much so we’re growing roots! (humour inspired by local nature).  Don’t worry, the fruits of our labour will blossom shortly.  (That’s the last nature pun, promise!)

We do practice what we preach sometimes!  The Burnout Queens always take nourishment when and where we can grab it, especially on the roof terrace among the flowers in the blazing sun.

It’s never all work, no play for us.  We will stop and take in the latest West End theatre production when it arrives.  It’s a fab way to leave work behind for a few hours.  This month it was ‘After Miss Julie’ a dark drama with actress Helen George (Call the Midwife).

And everything is more exciting under a full moon, especially when it hovers over The Channel right outside our terrace!

We’re looking ahead to a special stay-cation (relatives coming to stay) with day trips to new and never-before-seen villages and castles along the coastline.  Can’t wait (fingers crossed the trains aren’t striking or we’ll be forced to shop, shop, shop and have lots and lots of tea and cake).

Till next month from the coastal seaside and London…or who knows where (complete with pictures) enjoy your month.

Love,

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx

Are You Ready to Embrace Chaos? Change, Chaos, and being an HSP

Are You Ready to Embrace Chaos? Change, Chaos, and being an HSP

When you are burned-out you feel caught between being totally overwhelmed by life as it exists and the intense desire to change absolutely everything.  When the desire to change wins out there is no stopping a Burnout Queen.  I was reminded of this by a client who, a year post-burnout, was looking at shaking up her life big time and asking herself an important question, “Am I up to it?”  However, it was her second question that really rumbled the heavens for me,

“Am I ready to handle the chaos of change again?”

I know that sometime over the next year I’m going to have to make some big changes and frankly I’m right there with her.  It’s been many years since I put my burnout lifestyle behind me for good, but there are times, like when facing another life overhaul, that my energy droops.  My client nailed it…

It’s not the change that zaps my energy, it’s the inevitable chaos.

I dread the tension that accompanies chaos.  I dread the mess, the decisions, the starting point; did I mention the mess!   It’s like changing your clothes over from winter to summer; the piles, the choices, the tangle of hangers, giving up the comfort of knowing what’s what.  Total chaos (in the small scheme of things) but enough to make me put off doing it and hoping for rain just one more week!

Chaos makes me nervous, even downright anxious.  It’s what comes with the chaos that makes me want to avoid another big change: the discomfort, the uncertainty, the learning curve.  Of course, I am also met by all of the emotions associated with the chaos of change; self-doubt, fear, anger, and of course, overwhelm.

I should welcome these harbingers of change, they may be the very things that push me into the chaos and out the other side where I get to reap the benefits of my hard work and courage.  Anger can become my strength, overwhelm can demand focus, and the dreaded fear, well it can herald adventure.

It’s that breathless pause between chaos and change, comfort and chaos that is ripe with possibility.

Creativity happens in the impasse, somewhere between comfort and chaos, chaos and comfort.   This is the hard bit, we have to trust ourselves to sit in the impasse, tolerate the chaos until a solution, a change, becomes visible.  Not the easiest thing to do in a culture that worships decisions, ultimate decisions, fast decisions, flat-out black and white decisions.

But I sit, straddling the wall, pondering my ability to once more jump into the unknown.  Trusting that I will know, I will sense, when I am ready to plunge into the chaos.

The very nature of life is constant movement, constant flux, constant change!  So I don’t think I will ever get extremely comfortable in chaos, not with my highly sensitive nature, but I understand it and tolerate chaos more post-burnout.  I reassure myself that it is an alright state of being, for a time.  I mean I wouldn’t want to live there, but maybe a little chaos is just the thing I need to get me going!

There is renewal waiting in chaos.

I can’t live life the way I want if I don’t embrace change.  I guess that means that from time to time, chaos is going to be my companion.  So I’m going to treat it like a welcomed friend, but one who knows when it is time to leave!  So if you hear yourself saying, “I don’t like change or I’m not good at change” , ask yourself,  “Is it the change or is it the chaos?”

But My Darlings, even with the chaos, you’ve got to love change because change changes everything!

The Naked Truth About Time …and it’s not time management

BOQ-naked-truth-time

In our last article we talked about time tension, that nagging, urgent sense of time crowding us out of our lives.  Personally we both have time in our lives to do what we want or need to do.  Now, this was not some benevolent random act of the Universe, oh no, we designed and maintain life this way.  Our everyday, non-rushing lifestyle is the result of creative planning, some sacrificing, most definitely some risk taking…and much soul searching.  So why, I ask myself, do I still find myself lamenting the lack of time and arguing with myself over scheduling?

Since some smart-alec put sand in a bottle and called it ‘time management’ we never have ‘enough’ time.
{tweet this}

“It’s all lies” (she boldly declares!).  Don’t know about you, but I can never come up with the ‘perfect’ schedule.  We spend time, energy and yes money trying to figure out how we can steal more time, stretch time, or maybe just bend it a little.  Heard these before?

♦       When I have more time I will…

♦       When things slow down I will…

♦       When I’m caught up I will…

♦       If I just had an extra hour…

♦       I’ll get to it later…

The naked truth about time?
We live time, we don’t manage it!
{tweet this}

We can’t buy more time.  We can’t turn back time.  We can’t make-up time. Time does not fly, nor does it stand still .  We do not have all the time in the world…or no time at all.  There are 24 hours in a day and it’s not going to change anytime soon.

Maybe you haven’t thought of it this way before, but our days are our lives in miniature.  How we use time in our day, what we choose to include, exclude, focus on or ignore reflects the bigger picture of our life.

Simply put, if it’s important to you
it will be reflected in your day.

(Stop groaning, stick with us and you will see how clear and easy it can be!)

With a couple of simple ideas, we can all make those 24 hours ripe with opportunities.  (Oh we know, sleeping…but what about dreams? Dreams point the way to opportunities.)

You say…

♦       Taking care of yourself is important –  How are you doing that today?

♦       You want to include everyday spirituality  –  Is it in your plan for the day?

♦       You want more creative time with your children  –  What’s on your agenda?

♦       You are going to spend less time at work – What’s your overtime this week?

For the next few weeks, use your calendar to reflect how you choose to live your life.  It’s simple, it’s inspired, and it’s something you can do everyday.

Here’s another no-brainer:  Each hour presents 3 opportunities to ‘do’ something.  It’s our 20 minute solution.  (Dr. B finds this one works for her as she tends to ‘get lost’ in her work!)  I find it a great help and especially useful to lower my stress if I am in a state of time urgency.  Here’s a practical example:  next 20 minutes is for editing this article;  then I will answer emails for 20 minutes.  Full Stop.  The third 20 minute opportunity, well the dachs have their legs crossed so it’s off to the garden for a pit-stop!  20 minutes of relaxation and fresh air.  The next hour presents three more opportunities.  Need more time for something, reserve a 40 minute block or even a 80 minute lunch break.  Try it, this one works!

It’s time to stop pretending
that we don’t know what to do with time.

Living with time is as natural as breathing.  What other choice do we have? Discard the myth of time management and begin to live time.  Start today by asking yourself, “What do I want to do?”  instead of  “What do I need to get done?”  You will be astonished by your answers.  You will find yourself ‘wanting’ to do chores, ‘wanting’ to have fun, ‘wanting’ to relax, ‘wanting’ to read that story to your child, ‘wanting’ to make progress on that project.  So, are you ready Burnout Queens?  It’s time to stage your own creative revolution…

Don’t fall for the myth of time management,
get inspired by time!

Time Tension, Time Pressure, Time Stress | This HSPs War With Time

BOQ-time-crown

Time (ime, ime, ime) is on my side…really?

Thank-you Rolling Stones for your reassuring words.  In all truth, I have never felt at ease with time.  Oh how I wish I did.  From the moment I wake up until the time I go to sleep I feel ‘as if’ I’m at war with time.  Strangely, my time tension has nothing real or practical to do with time.

If you are also an HSW (Highly Sensitive Woman) you may know exactly what I am talking about.  Regardless of what you call it: time urgency, time pressure, chronic time stress, or time tension, it feels like “the wolves are at the door”.  The pressure cooker of time makes me believe that I am never going to accomplish enough of anything.

Time tension, when unchecked, leaves me drained and breathless in a spiritual kind of way.

Time tension simply exists within me.  It has nothing to do with a clock ticking, deadlines or even the ultimate fact that there are 24 hours in a day and nothing is going to change that.  No, time tension reflects a lived experience of time: instead of feeling that time can flow easily I experience a squeezed anticipation of time.  There aren’t a lot of real emotions associated with time tension, it’s just there.  It feels like being in a race with no finish line in sight.  If there were a real deadline at least I could worry, but my time tension is an illusion.

Today is a perfect example: no scheduled appointments, no expected interruptions (hopefully the planets are all aligned!), only 3 things on the ‘get done’ list, and yet as I write about time tension I feel it covertly settling into the armchair in my office waiting there for the opportunity to leap onto my back and intimidate me with time.  It’s only purpose is to throw me into a tizz or make me freeze with fright.  Time raises the spectre of disasters and failures; of not getting done what I need to get done.  Thing is, it’s not true, I usually get done what I need to get done.  I make a point of not over-tasking myself.  There are no secret time disasters lurking in the shadows.

I think this exaggerated fear of time comes from a mix of nature and nurture.  I was born with a ‘hummingbird temperament’ (no insult intended to the bird world, I love hummingbirds) it is natural for me to do everything fast, fast (attested to by my many bumped heads, bruised knees, and slightly chopped fingers!)  Then I grew-up with parents who never ‘wasted’ time.  I was ‘late’ getting up by 8:30 in the morning having wasted half the day!  I marveled at how Mum could accomplish six things at once, bake 3 things simultaneously, welcome whoever arrived at the door for tea with a smile and always fresh baking.  Super woman in my child’s eyes.  However, from my rather advanced vantage point now (ah hmm) I can see that she was always in a state of time tension, she didn’t necessarily do everything perfectly as I once thought, and rarely took any time to stop, relax and enjoy life.  It was always a buzz.

Constantly arm wrestling with time eventually harms your health, happiness and success.

What the use of time management if time is the enemy?  When you are caught in the net of time urgency no amount of time management or prioritising is going to make a difference.  That is not what time tension is about.  You simply can’t run fast enough to outrun the pressure of time.  It’s the way we relate to time that creates the stress and urgency.  Sadly, the outcome of time tension is most often anxiousness or avoidance, procrastination and indecision.  We all know where that leads…more stress, tension and pressure.

At this point I’m supposed to offer you at least 5 tips on how to overcome time urgency (…thinking…)  Ok, time’s up!  I don’t have 5 tips.  I have thought and thought about this over the last few days and I have only one tip, the only one that works for me.  Here it is…

To stop the anxiousness and the avoidance we have to acknowledge the creepy little time monster lurking in the dark corner.  Go ahead and yell BOO at it!  Send it running.  Sure it will creep back in, maybe each and every day, but you no longer have to give it the time of day.

By now you probably, intuitively know if you engage in this war with time, but in case you are still wondering here are a few signs of time tension:

  • finger tapping, knee or foot jiggling
  • doing several things at once
  • having a hard time sitting still to do nothing
  • fidgeting
  • facial tension or tautness
  • eating fast and never just dawdling at the table
  • during conversations thinking about other things or what’s next

If any of these tip-offs ring your alarm bell, don’t hit the snooze button and pull the covers over your head!  Wake up to the knowledge that your relationship with time isn’t about minutes, or hours, it’s all about perception!  The time tension you feel doesn’t truly exist.   Don’t let it determine the mood of your day, after all…

Time (ime, ime, ime) is on YOUR side.  YES IT IS!

Don’t Just Speak Up, Show up! | The Power of Assertion

BOQ-assertion-banner

In our last Feature Article we talked about speaking-up and being heard while remaining true to our sensitive, creative and unique nature.  Well, as promised, this article is going to take assertiveness to a whole new level of importance.  We are going to shake your awareness!  But, first you have to change the word from assertiveness to assertion…now we are talking Burnout Queen language!

Assertion means being seen, heard and counted.

Assertion is believing you have the right to speak up, take up space, be noticed, be visible and be known for all your strengths and gifts.  Now that’s powerful.

BUT…BUT…BUT…

We are girls.  We are not supposed to be pushy, bossy, grabby, selfish, and we are not supposed to let our tempers rip!  We are not supposed to know too much, brag too much or push our way to the front of the line!  Absolutely not, it’s not ladylike to elbow your way through the crowd or throw your hand up to be the first to answer or yell  “ I know, I know!”  We are not supposed to want second helpings or the biggest piece of cake.  We are definitely not supposed to go around bragging about all of our A-marks, the goals we scored or our latest promotion.

It’s a cultural thing.  (Sigh…)   We were raised and trained in NON-Assertiveness.  This non-assertiveness training reinforces the idea that we shouldn’t be big, loud, demanding, decisive, noticeable or powerful.  Yes, girls are raised and trained to be pink and perfect.  (Yes still, it hasn’t changed much, check out the toy stores).

Now here’s where it gets interesting; this is BIG stuff, really big, as in life changing big!

Your accomplishments are expressions of your assertion! Assertion is achieving.
{tweet this}

Read that one line again and let it sink in!  Achievement is not usually included in the definition of assertiveness.  However, when we change the word to assertion the meaning changes as well.  Now we are talking being seen and heard, in short being visible!  Assertion includes communicating and expressing yourself.  It also means being creative, making bold decisions, being big, bravely taking up space in the world and…here it comes…achieving.

When you fear assertiveness, you will avoid assertion and that means avoiding accomplishing and achieving.  You will avoid failure AND success.  This has huge ramifications.  What if you are an artist, a lawyer, a teacher, what if you want to run your own business, write songs, take amazing photos.  Whose going to know?  Whose going to see them?  Whose life can you change if you are afraid of being known?

Think of it this way…

When you stay out of the spotlight for whatever reason you can say ‘bye-bye’ to accomplishing and achieving all of the things in life that you want or dream of doing and being.

The power of assertion is expressing who you are through your success.
{tweet this}

This new awareness is profoundly life changing and a part of us fights against believing it because of our non-assertion training.  Non-assertion training leads to feeling torn between wanting to achieve your dreams and wanting to stay comfortably (or invisibly) in the background.  Non-assertion training leads you to believe that your drive to achieve is unnatural or undesirable, but the need to achieve, accomplish and create is built-in.  The desire to be all that you can be is as natural as breathing.

When you stifle your natural drive towards assertion and block that energy you end up tense, anxious, frustrated, worried, fearful, stuck, bored, unfulfilled, unsatisfied and underachieving!

When you cannot, will not, assert who you are in the world you end up burning out.

So it’s consciousness raising time!  When you hold yourself back from being everything you can be ~ brave, bold, authentic, successful, achieving & enthusiastic ~ you are robbing the world of all the glorious strength, creativity and love you have to offer!

Stop worrying about being too smart, too strong, too expressive of your unique self, too bold, too powerful, too opinionated, too independent, too brave and yes, even too successful or accomplished.

Ladies, repeat after me…

When I embrace who I am, when I achieve what I want, when I accomplish my dreams I embody the power of assertion.

Go ahead, speak up, stand up and stand out.

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx
