Hello from the English countryside!

Hello from Lewes & London from the Burnout Queens!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 7 May 2016

Well April was full of ups and downs for The Burnout Queens and Pups both weather-wise and personally.  Yet another rain and wind storm (some might call it a hurricane) of 100 mile per hour gusts that hit early April really delivered a punch.  The plants fell over on the roof terrace, the windows rattled, and of course it came ashore in the middle of the night!   We decided to check out the aftermath when the sun came out next day and  could not believe our eyes…the waves rolled the beach rocks up and over the promenade (and believe me some of those stones were rocks) and apparently uprooted several of the cute beach huts as well!

Day trips were off  thanks to unrelenting tube and rail strikes.  We were beached seaside (didn’t this happen a couple of months ago?!)…and that’s when April turned very different…

One week into the month and things started to unravel.  First, we had shocking news that a London friend and her dog were missing (Helen Bailey and Boris)! You only read about these things, but it has had our minds whirling all over the place.  We just keep holding onto hope.

A few days later, the youngest Burnout Pup jumped onto the front steps and clipped her chin so hard she dislodged one of her teeth.  Off to the vet she went and returned minus 3 bottom front teeth!  Recouperation on the couch (milked it) and a visit from the tooth fairy made for a happy puppy.  The  following week we found ourselves rushing the other BP off to the vet emergency after a sleepless night.  Blood tests, pain meds, zonked dog and misdiagnosis had us all exhausted and spent!  Of course he needed his reward too, so he got his picture taken in his dapper sweater (honestly, you have to laugh, they are such divas).

No moments of fun, excitement and curiosity seeking, but we don’t call ourselves The Burnout Queens for nothing.  When upheaval hits, we know first-hand what gets us through the mess and out the other side.   We just have to hold onto our humour, our rituals and look for small signs of sanity and stability in our everyday.  For that Mother Nature always delivers.

As I write this, April is over and we are getting back on our feet, focusing on new projects at work, and finding moments in the sunshine to just chillax!

Can’t wait for summer!

Love,

The Burnout Queens | Dr Toby and Dr Bev

Hello from Brighton & London: 9 April 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

We’re settling nicely into Spring seaside.  March is always about clearing the cobwebs and getting out-and -about to explore what’s new.  You know The Burnout Queens are all about living a burnout-proof lifestyle, so what better time than spring, to pursue that balance between work and play.

There is nothing better than that first beach romp in the year, especially when  rewarded with an outdoor snack of tea and teacakes.  (We all love our teacakes at the beach cafe).  And while breathing in the sea-air on the beach is fabulous, as far as I’m concerned, there is no better discovery than a window full of delicious easter delights (we couldn’t resist).

March in London means the Affordable Art Fair and we always find that special piece to be enjoyed forever (like the chocolate shop, should have left the credit card at home).

But London isn’t the only kind of culture we now enjoy.  To say Brighton dishes it’s own brand of culture and vibe is an understatement.  Everything from style (who wears these high heels), to the buzz of food and friends in The Laines, to the quirky backstage door of the theatre royal, and all the street music (yes it’s a piano-playing zebra), it keeps us walking, gawking and definitely smiling.

You know what we always say don’t you?  “Expect the Unexpected”.  Well, it doesn’t get more unexpected than this home-to-go parked around the corner from us.  It was soooo cute and quirky we just had to take a snapshot.  I must admit I’m becoming a convert to Tiny House Nation, but this just took the prize!

Workwise, we set aside a week of planning and design for three new programmes to be launched this year… and now the writing and videos begins.  Never shy for a challenge, we believe these programmes will be ‘just what the doctors ordered’ to shed your stress, embrace your sensitivity and live a burnout-proof lifestyle in the same way we do (well not exactly the same, but you get the drift).

We want all of you to recognise the beauty and sense of spirit in your daily living… so when moments like this happen, you’ll be ready to embrace the wonderment!

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but as May (omg) approaches, see you at the beach!

Hello from Brighton & London: 5 March 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

I can feel spring in the air, can you?  Mother nature was determined to show her full compliment of force this February—sun , wind, rain, storms and new blooms, plus a Leap Day thrown in for good measure!  So…we took advantage of the  sunny days to enjoy early blooms in our neighbourhood park, while walking The Burnout Pups.  Nothing more exciting after a walk though than a newly opened bag of dogfood, especially when this pup turns it into a personal feast!

Did we say February was stormy?  No less than four wind storms hit us seaside.  Sometimes it was a challenge to keep standing in the 75 mile an hour windgusts.  I left Dr T holding tight to the streetlamp while I pushed my way to the end of the road to snap a shot of the high waves crashing onto the beach.  The picture isn’t great (I stood at a distinct angle to stay upright) but the sight and sound of those crashing waves were spectacular!  Really, the things we do to get shots for all of you.

The Burnout Pups aren’t the only ones who love a treat.  We unexpectedly found this darling little Valentine’s cake in the window of our local patisserie and knew that Sunday’s dessert was settled!  Our motto…always expect the unexpected (it was deliciously delightful).

Speaking of hearts,we  spent Valentine’s Day morning at a vintage fair!  We knew we were in trouble when we both recognised all the clothes, bangles and jewels as things we once wore as teenagers…so Happy Valentine’s Day…we are officially vintage?!  In honour of  the day, Dr B found herself these stunning pair of red shades to try on.  Definitely not her style or shape (whoosh, some things from the vintage fair should be left at the vintage fair me thinks)!

Of course, we did work in February.  We welcomed new members into our global women’s club (The Realm),  Dr T was head down finishing and editing the 2nd edition of our signature programme, and  Dr B was updating and blogging on all our social media platforms, and our own private membership site (which is totally different from a website) is completed and ticking over.  We’re always creating and this spring will be no different.  Stay tuned….

We can’t wait until March comes along.  The easter bunny always brings chocolate, Art Season officially arrives in London, new museum exhibits begin (we’re already filling in the diary), and who knows what we’ll be up to seaside!

Have a great leap into spring, push your clocks forward and see you at the beach! (we’ll be the ones with the 2 mini-dogs & tea)

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx

Hello from London & Brighton

Darlings how are you! January 1st came quietly seaside (always an HSP plan). Lots of end-of-holiday relaxing, browsing through magazines, and of course, the pups being cute and crazy. All this while the weather outside was truly frightful! (windy, rainy and chilly…we left Canada to escape this but it seems they bundled it up and sent it over on the jetstream…lovely)

Speaking of weather, we tried to get up to London to soak in some culture, but trains were cancelled so change of plan…we enjoyed theatre seaside. We’re officially ‘sworn-to-secrecy about whodunit in London’s longest running mystery The Mousetrap (yes they insist at curtain call you cannot reveal anything, so lips are sealed), Fabulous entertainment and no it wasn’t the butler! (Dr T had figured it out early, but I didn’t see it coming at all!)

Spring is determined to arrive, so beauty isn’t far behind in the gardens and the flower shops. When I see the first buds and flowers it makes me want to get out of hibernation and leisurely browse the streets and shops in our quirky town.

February’s Leap Year is coming up, so we will have to discover something new and exciting this year. Will share it next time. And what about you?
