Hello from the English countryside!

Hello from Lewes & London from the Burnout Queens!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 1 October 2016

Happy October!  September brought the last few days of our family visit, and that meant enjoying the last few days of cultural splendour at museums and castles in and around London.  An exhibition of lingerie, a bomb scare evacuation at the coach station (made for a hasty retreat into the back streets), the little train ride to the castle, all added-up to a great time.

And now The Burnout Queens are back to normal, whatever you want normal to be when you live and work from home.   For us seaside normal is enjoying rituals like Sunday breakfasts and Friday doughnut mornings in The North Laines.  It’s a fabulous way to enjoy the vibe of the area and squeeze in our daily walk as well.

Getting back into the everyday groove can be challenging, so we booked something cultural to give us a day away from ‘the office’.  Brighton was the final stop for the play, ‘The Dresser’ prior to opening on London’s West End.  We couldn’t miss this opportunity for brilliant acting and drama, so we dropped everything and booked an afternoon matinee (the perks of solopreneurs).   If you are in London go see it, it’s fab, and if you aren’t you can always watch the timeless movie.

We are definitely ready for Autumn and any rainfall that arrives with it.  Well, The Burnout Pups are at least.  No more wringing out the buckets of damp from these shorties now that new raingear is here (they always look adorable).  And while we didn’t get new rain attire, we will console ourselves with yummy tea and home baking!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 10 September 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

September already!  The Burnout Queens are just back from a two-week family break (we hesitate to call it a rest).  Here’s our “What we did on summer holidays” report with tour pics as promised.  So grab your cuppa and join us on the road.

Three generations on a mission Burnout Queen style to soak up history in our new South East England countryside and London, shop, and eat cake whenever possible.  Of course The Burnout Pups were over-the-moon because it’s always fun to pounce on visitors in the early morning.

They had one wish; they wanted to see castles.  No fairytales needed with real-life dukes, ladys, knights, kings and queens in their stately homes, castles, pavillions and palaces!  Pure history, glitz, pomp, and shenanigans.

First stop London, it’s Buckingham Palace of course.  One ‘must’ visit the Queen Darling!

90 Years of Reign and 150 beautiful outfits worn by the queen over the decades.  Highlight… the coronation dress (pearls, diamonds and embroidery and that’s just the dresses without the crown and jewellry), wedding dress (now we are talking fairytale) and evening gowns for state visits!

A short stop at the gift shop (couldn’t resist Dr T and this tea towel)! One last glimpse of Dr B in the grounds at Buckingham Palace and we’re off for proper tea in the Queen’s Salon at Fortnum & Mason.  (Hottest day in London all summer and we’re walking and wilting!  Thank heavens three tiers of sandwiches, scones and cake await us).

Arundel Castle was stunning (if you’ve never been go).  The size of the entrance gates alone was overwhelming (that’s Dr B dwarfed by castle gate).  To think one family has and still lives here since 1060’s is mindblowing (sadly we missed having tea with the Duke of Norfolk).  The gardens were magnificent and the whole day at the castle was truly eye-popping.  A return visit is definitely required since Dr T looks right at home!  (She wishes!)

Tired yet?  Our pedicured feet were screaming for mercy after all the walking, climbing stairs, and curtsying (only kidding!).  We rested and regrouped for yet another castle  (we had a mission to fulfill)!

Well, we’ve been here before but couldn’t wait to show the relatives this last little village and castle.  Built in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings it has oodles of vibe and a daunting 135 stairs to the top of that Keep (how did those armour-plated soldiers do it?)  As you can see, we made it!

Of course we always expect the unexpected and Lewes did not disappoint!  After a yummy breakfast in the village we encountered these beauties,  They are  Shire horses, the largest of England’s native draught horses.  Okay, my last shot is just a bit quirky, but hey, a Burnout Queen is entitled after all the walking  and cake!

Done (there are more pics, but you gotta draw the line somewhere)!  Mission accomplished.  We were all pleasantly tired, shopped out, and already planning the next visit as we said goodbye at the train station, boo hoo!  We all had a fabulous time.  The Pups concur.

Now to work!  Enjoy your September as you settle into your Autumn groove.  Be on the lookout because The Burnout Queens are launching a new programme later this month!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 6 August 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Well Darlings, July came and went without any fuss or bother!   Really, the Burnout Queens’ usual trips were cancelled due to the train strikes, slowdowns, overcrowding, and track fires!   So we stayed seaside.

pic-1-seaside

Although we love the ‘buzz’ of London, staying local and low-key nurtures the quiet-seeking side of our Highly Sensitive souls.

We’ve been keeping our noses deep down in work all month, so much so we’re growing roots! (humour inspired by local nature).  Don’t worry, the fruits of our labour will blossom shortly.  (That’s the last nature pun, promise!)

pic-2-tree

We do practice what we preach sometimes!  The Burnout Queens always take nourishment when and where we can grab it, especially on the roof terrace among the flowers in the blazing sun.

pic-3-roof-flowers

pic-4-lunch-on-roof

It’s never all work, no play for us.  We will stop and take in the latest West End theatre production when it arrives.  It’s a fab way to leave work behind for a few hours.  This month it was ‘After Miss Julie’ a dark drama with actress Helen George (Call the Midwife).

And everything is more exciting under a full moon, especially when it hovers over The Channel right outside our terrace!

pic-5-theatre

pic-6-full-moon

We’re looking ahead to a special stay-cation (relatives coming to stay) with day trips to new and never-before-seen villages and castles along the coastline.  Can’t wait (fingers crossed the trains aren’t striking or we’ll be forced to shop, shop, shop and have lots and lots of tea and cake).

Till next month from the coastal seaside and London…or who knows where (complete with pictures) enjoy your month.

Love,

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx

Hello from Brighton & London!: 9 July 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Happy July Holiday to our Canadian and American friends.  And Happy 7th UK Anniversary to The Burnout Queens.

This month, we’re showing you our favourite daytrip locale in London…Chelsea.  We love, love, love spending time here (we rented a flat here while we planned our big move to the UK).  When you ‘do’ Chelsea you don’t ever ‘do’ dull!

An unexpected delight was this shoe shop’s sidewalk with a shabby-chic bench topped with wooden boxes full of the most delightful flowers.  What a truly urban garden (we’re going to steal this idea it’s so fabulous).

1 chelsea daytrip

By now you know each London daytrip involves some form of culture and art, like the Saatchi Gallery debute party for The Stone’s Exhibitionism!  No we weren’t invited, but we did enjoy the iconic street installation…

2 chelsea daytrip

3 chelsea daytrip

Easy to soak in the style of Chelsea whether sitting to rest our tired shopping feet (where are all the parcels…behind the photographer…there were quite a few this trip) or grabbing a quick cuppa in one of the open air caff’s.  It just makes The Burnout Queens instantly relax and feel right at home again.

A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do when it comes to shopping in Chelsea, so we are never sat still for long.  Just one last stop before we start the ride home!  And Chelsea being Chelsea, the transportation was supremely unexpected (no this is not how we got home, although I wish…)

6 chelsea daytrip

7 chelsea daytrip

Definitely a few £££’s lighter, we endured a cramped trainride back to the seaside and the pups who are always over-the-moon in their greeting.  Then it’s back to work, tending the roof garden (aubergine/eggplant, tomatoe/tomato and loads of lettuce), and generally waiting for sunshine and our next adventure!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 4 June 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Can you believe it’s already June?  Where is this year going we wonder (seems time flies when you are having fun or getting older, you choose).  The month of May was more upbeat than April for The Burnout Queens.  It was celebration time for Dr T’s birthday, which meant lots of cakes (a welcomed delivery from our puppysitter), a daytrip to Lewes, fun breakfast and browsing 11th century style.

We thought you might like a glimpse into our seaside lifestyle as it unfolded. So after a 16 minute train ride we arrived and first stop was breakfast on the most beautiful little street.  Of course we couldn’t leave the restaurant (which used to be a grocer’s store) before snooping at all the bright products around us.

3 lewes cliffe district

4 browse after breakfast

Then it was off to do what The Burnout Queens do best…browse, walk, explore,  discover, and be inspired by the architecture, gardens and history from 11th century settlements.

5 browse streets

6 southover gardens

7 southover gardens 1758

Finally, the quick hop back to The Burnout Pups and a check-in on the ‘real’ world during the 16 minute return trip.  And it all ended with all 4 of us enjoying those yummy cupcakes (yes we ate them all).

8 checking in after fun

Hope you enjoyed the trip.  Life after burnout can be as interesting as you make it.  Till next month from the seaside and London.

Love,
