Hello from London & Brighton

Happy 2017 from the Seaside xx

This year the holidays were low-key, what with train strikes (endlessly marooned seaside) and the dreaded cold and flu that hit 50% of the UK population (shouldn’t have had tea with the Queen we’re thinking).

Over the last decade, The Burnout Queens have found the holidays a time of imposed exile.  The week leading up to December 25th has a history of great losses and tragedy, so we have kept a low profile and at times wanted the festivities to ‘just pass quickly by’.

However, this year we made a concerted effort to forge new traditions (remember last issue?) and enjoy the decorated windows and our Christmas Eve dinner at Bill’s Restaurant complete with sticky toffee pudding and chocolate pudding desserts (truly divine).

Thought you’d appreciate the christmas cracker jokes that accompanied the toy pencil sharpener, eye patch and paper crowns (no there is no picture of us wearing them)

Joke 1:  What did the grape do when it got stepped on?  Answer: It let out a little wine!

Joke 2:  Where would you find chili beans?  Answer:  At the north pole!

Ba-dum-bum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, the niece from Canada is determined to reignite our holiday spirit with knitted snowmen arriving by post! (humour and creativity obviously a family trait!).  Even The Burnout Pups got unexpected gifts this year from a lovely new friend …hmmm they look life-like don’t they!

Mostly though, we took the cold/flu and train strike thing, as a great excuse to just quietly rest, read, do a puzzle and catch up on some great telly over the holdiays (oh yeah, and eating the chocolate treats).

We hope your holidays were just as restful and rejuvenating, because Darling, the new year has arrived and we have adventures to create, plans afoot, and new horizons to climb in 2017!   And we’ll share the lot!

Until next month,  Embrace Life!

Love,

The Burnout Queens | Dr Toby and Dr Bev

Hello from Brighton & London!: 3 December 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

I cannot believe that I am writing the last issue of ‘Hello’ for 2016!   We’ll be showing you all the Christmas pics and news in early January.  This issue is about a birthday, new seaside and seasonal traditions, before Christmas chaos descends.  Perhaps our way of approaching the holidays will inspire you to introduce new traditions as well.

November started with a birthday for the eldest Burnout Pup.  His 7th year and he’s as quirky as ever (maybe more so) and he’s learned to expect a present or two and a sweet (although we enjoy more of the sweet than he does).

Seaside is about  Street style.  Everything from tiny burger joints to bold edgy street art.  You are never stuck for something different and quirky to look at.  And that’s exactly what happens after our Friday doughnut days and Sunday pancake breakfasts (new traditions).

Our new holiday traditions are about avoiding the stress and chaos of gift-giving and focusing on enjoying the holiday decorations.  What better place to start than a day of ‘no-to-low-cost’ browsing in London (is there anywhere else at holiday time).  Chelsea Christmas Craft Fayre at the Chelsea Physic Garden is a ‘must see’ not only for the beautiful crafts (no toilet paper doilies or knitted finger puppets here) but the gardens themselves as they winter-over.   Sorry no pics we were busy buying chocolates and winter scarves for ourselves (new tradition)!

It is still a ‘pinch me’ moment enjoying Chelsea pre-christmas.   We  browsed the shops on King’s Road (pinch me), had tea in the patisserie we love (pinch me) saw the new hanging lights at Peter Jones that can be dizzying and finished up in Sloane Square (okay really pinch me).  Then it was a quick walk along a street of architecturally beautiful homes we adore before catching the train home (did we spot Nigella?).

The month ended with the youngest Burnout Pup having an emergency vet visit, a few sick days before getting back to her adorable self.

And then there are the traditional daily walks that have changed with the season.  Now the leaves are on the ground instead of in the beautiful 300 year old trees (yes you heard that right…300 years) but still as welcoming and peaceful as ever.

On the work front The Burnout Queens are catching up on projects that got sidelined for launches, puppy nursing and just plain old time off for good behaviour (the beauty of working for yourself…whatever reason seems reasonable)!

Our holiday break is fast approaching and we’ll be busy in a quirky kind of way.  The new tradition is a1000 piece puzzle to get OCD over (believe me it happens, even the petsitter can’t help herself!), a good evening of watching telly for all the Christmas Specials, some fabulous chocolate delights thanks to our Chelsea Christmas trip, and some reading for pleasure.  As always there will be the tree, the dinner, and a quick Santa visit  added to the mix.  But you will see us again just before we break.

Until next time, have a fabulously delicious month!

Love,

Hello from Brighton & London!: 5 November 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Thought you might like a behind-the- scenes look at a typical work week for us.  Enjoy our style of work, chores and play.

The autumn/winter chill has arrived seaside, so dogs wear coats and we wear sweaters and hoodies to start the morning ritual (just picture squirrels running, dogs chasing and us flying along at the back of the lead and you will understand the blur here).  Oh, and if it rains (ah, it’s England)  then one little pup is miserable because her raincoat doesn’t have a hoodie  (but the wethead look is just too adorable)!

Sometimes we do our best work away from the office so it’s easy to double-duty work with tea.  Add in a few must-do chores and it becomes a great excuse to shop our favourite brands and take a long walk.

We’re not always out and about.  Working globally, means being at the desk for our clients (does anyone wonder what international calling looks like from this end of the line).   And we do our filming for The Realm from HQ each month so lights, camera,  action all happens at the library table before loading to our YouTube Channel.  The upside of working from home?  It is so easy to squeeze something into small pockets of time, and that’s exactly what Dr. T did to prep the terrace for winter planting.  The rest will wait until the weekend.

When The Burnout Queens are out-and-about either working, walking or doing chores we always take delight in what’s happening around us.  You know the motto by now…expect the unexpected.   These last few months we’ve unexpectedly bumped  into ‘snogdogs’ in various parts of Brighton and Hove.

We’ve only snapped  3 of the fantastic 45 dogs on our travels.   Great art, great fun and for a great cancer charity, Martlet’s.

Prepping for vacation: The Burnout Queens style

expensive-pen

Here we were rushing, working, preparing, writing, and recording our latest programme all before the lovely relations joined us for two weeks of hols in the hot english seaside.

We were working to a deadline but it was a mindset and an arbitrary date that, if kept, would see us exhausted and grumpy for the hols (I wish they weren’t coming so soon) instead of anticipating them with joy (can’t wait to see them again)!  So we decided it’s joy rather than exhaustion.

How did we turn it around in our favour. You know the answer. We did it with Burnout Queen-style!

  • Listening to our own wisdom (walking the walk)
  • Being mindful of our bodies screaming ‘stop already’
  • Prioritising us over the work (front & centre)
  • Knowing when to say ‘no’ and let it go

That meant we stopped early and left the outstanding bits for our return. The old burnout personality would have thought ‘eeek not a wise decision, better get it finished because you may not be able to find that groove you were in’.   Well that groove was turning into a right old rut and we’ve learned that leaving it can be a far wiser choice.  We had written down where to begin again and what we wanted to say in an outline, so we were covered.  Done with the prep work, all we needed on  return were the sparkly touches.

We trusted how we were feeling and made decisions about our health before digging in and running ourselves into the ground.  We were not going to spoil this vacation. No way, no how. These Burnout Queens had palaces and castles to conquer and lots and lots of tea and cake to eat!

By golly that’s exactly what happened.  Palaces, teas and castles delighted all of us and on return to work, the new programme was sparkled up and launched!

Next time you have a deadline with something wonderful as it’s reward make sure you have the energy left to enjoy it fully.  Remember to prepare for your vacation in true Burnout-Queen-style.

The programme?  We’ve called it …

Seeking Beauty

florian

“Oh I can’t afford beautiful things”…

How often I hear this from women who are in jobs they hate, barely making ends meet and thinking they won’t find beauty in their life until something changes.

Well, something can change and that something is how we seek beauty.

You don’t have to purchase anything to have beauty in your life.  Here’s one of the ways I seek beauty.

Stress instantly gets replaced by beauty when I walk into a beautiful florist shop.  Gorgeous flower displays in a shop window entice me in.  I just let the colours, smells and atmosphere start filling my brain with happiness.  It’s a beautiful thing.

As always, thank you Florian the Florist, Hove!  It’s always a delight to step inside your shop!

Love, The Burnout Queens xx
