Hello from London & Lewes

“And you know how much The Burnout Queens love tea!”

Ask anyone who knows Dr T & Dr B (aka The Burnout Queens) and they will tell you how much we love tea and cake.  In fact, we seem to have started a trend with clients and readers alike because we receive photos of others taking tea just like us.  How fabulous Darling!  (Why don’t you send us one as well?)

In this edition of Hello, we thought we would show you our favourite tea shops in and around our part of the world.  They aren’t fancy, but they are cozy, varied, always friendly, and serve a great cuppa.

Nothing better than tea inside on a rainy day or looking over the small back garden when the sun comes out.  Artwork on the walls, banter with the owner, and always a smiling face (Patisserie Lewes).

On the ‘chores’ run down the hill into town we catch a quick pick-me-up before facing the dreaded grocery store line-ups (Flint Owl Bakery).

If we’re craving a jelly doughnut this never gets missed (Baked Out) or we need a boost of energy, the music here is always toe-tapping (Backyard Café and Needlemakers).

When we truly want a vibe, a hello, and great atmosphere it’s here (Le Magasin) where they refer to us as ‘the Canadian ladies’.

And then there’s always our regular ‘sit and relax’ after massage in Brighton (Flour Pot Bakery), a tradition for the last three years!

If you love tea like The Burnout Queens do, perhaps you will melt over this video from Fortnum and Mason who really know what tea is all about.  Enjoy this perfect masterclass in the importance of tea (hope you follow the instructions at the end xx).

Fortnum & Mason – The Tea Film (1:34)

On May 19th we will be sipping and celebrating The Royal Wedding from our living room.  You can be certain that Wedding Breakfast, Royal Blend, and Prince of Wales teas will be poured throughout.  And of course, there will be cake!

Until next month, have a cuppa with us!

Hello from London & Lewes

“won’t you let me take you on a city cruise…ew wee, ew wee baby”

An apt little ditty for this edition of Hello.  We finally booked the petsitter and took a day off in London to explore and discover anything we wanted at the Victoria & Albert Museum.  No plan, but in this beautiful setting (that is free to the public) you can never be disappointed.   Here’s our recap.

We love seeing art students and clubs sitting on the floor or fold-up chairs throughout the museum drawing the famous sculptures, clothing and ancient artefacts around them as everyone passes by.  Who wouldn’t want to draw an original Rodin sculpture!

We discovered the poppy display commemorating the 16 V&A employees who lost their lives during WWI.  These were purchased from the famous poppy memorial that surrounded the moat at The Tower of London that we had the good fortune to see a few years ago.  So beautiful and moving.

Lunch break in the Member’s Room and a review of current exhibits on offer.  We had a choice between Winnie the Pooh drawings and Ocean Liners.  We picked the less noisy of the two (school break and screams from inside Winnie the Pooh rooms clinched the choice).  Ocean Liners it was.

People it was fantastic!  If you are in London go.  If you aren’t then let us take you on a city cruise (ew we, ew we baby).  The whole exhibit was set to give you the cruise experience (thankfully without the movement).  Into the first-class reception and through the guilt doors we go, ending up in the first class lounge (artefacts from the Queen Mary, and P&O Liners).  The costumes, the wood panelling, the sculptures, the chandeliers, the lifestyle…quite stunning.   A few yards on and you’re out on deck looking over the ocean as we sail past a huge ocean liner sailing past us.  You know it was sometimes difficult to know if you were standing by a real person or a mannequin, but never mind, it was all too intriguing to care.

Of course there is always a pool for a quick dip and dive before setting off for an evening in the ballroom under the stars.  First class all the way Darling!

After exiting (or disembarking as they say) the liner we were definitely happy we had seen it, although I don’t think either of us will see the open seas soon as Dr T doesn’t like ships and I don’t like wide open spaces of nothingness!!

Here’s an added bonus.  I received this video link from the V&A about how they captured the essence of the descending staircase in the ballroom and the historic costumes the ladies wore.  I hope you enjoy it.  (it’s a safe click through I promise).

Making an entrance ocean liner style (3:40)

I’m glad we didn’t have a set plan for the day, except to visit the V&A.  The Burnout Queens always expect the unexpected will bring us enjoyment and today’s trip gave us that and more.  Now we only have hundreds of little exhibits left to discover!

Until next month, ‘ew wee baby!’

Hello from Lewes & London! 3 March 2018

Hello from London & Lewes

It’s been so mild here in southern England that we were lulled into thinking spring was just around the corner.  As I sit here writing to you winter just snuck up and settled in with a bang.  Aptly named ‘the beast from the east’ it is bitterly cold, train passengers and motorists are stranded en route, and we have 10 severe weather warnings posted (Canada we are geographically as big in size as the province of B.C.) so the army and tractors are pitching in to rescue people.

What does this mean for The Burnout Queens and The Burnout Pups?  Let’s just say we are getting a lot of work done, drinking pots and pots of tea, baking and the pups (?) well, they are by our side sleeping cosily on their blankets.  These are the times we know we made a smart decision to work from home so we don’t have to brave the elements anymore.  Good planning The Burnout Queens!!!!!!

Whether you’re in the freeze, still stuck on the motorway or train, or warm in front of the fire, we hope this edition of Hello brings a bit of beauty and entertainment to you.  For those elsewhere in the world experiencing milder ‘climes’ enjoy as well.

Early February we bought a car (Dr B passed her UK drive test) so we bundled up the Burnout Pups and drove across town to Priory Park site of a 9th Century monastery.  Who walks their dogs amongst ruins built between 1078 and 1082 during the reign of Cluniac pope Gregory VII?   We do!  It’s fabulous and all four of us were excited to walk and learn as we went.  A definite walkie route is unanimously established (more in an upcoming extra edition of Hello).  Arrived home to two valentine’s day cards from Dog’s Trust pups to finish the outing properly.

Then came the first snowfall (thought we have dodged this moving from Canada, but no).  The street looked bleak, but I must admit the castle still looked pretty stunning, wouldn’t you agree?

Now the ‘beast from the east’ makes the pups hesitate before being taken outdoors for breaks.  Who wouldn’t if you had short legs, were slung low to the cold pavement and get hypothermia quickly!  The pleading eyes are a killer, but the youngest gets excited to romp, especially when wearing her pink fleece sweater and matching neck scarf (she insists wearing it over her head like The Queen).  We swore we would never be these kind of dog owners, but…guilty!

Hope still springs eternal on market day with these inspirations.  And we admit there is always room in the freezer for a Victoria Sponge to get us through cold evenings.  However, this Valentine’s cake was too glorious to pass up (at least for a photo op).

Now that we have a car (aka ‘Flash’) you can bet we’ll be going further afield to explore, walk and just enjoy this beautiful countryside we live in.  Don’t worry you’ll have a front row seat for all our journeys…promise.

Until next month, get a good winter’s rest like this guy does.  This is his version of mindfulness… going, going, GONE!

Love from all of us!

Hello from London & Lewes

Everyone is moaning about getting their goals together, making their yearly plans, and getting stuck into the hustle and bustle of the new year.   We just thought you might like to look at things a little differently, you know slow it down a bit and catch your breath.

Our first edition of Hello is not about the goals, it’s all about the ‘moment’

Every time either one of us goes out or even stays in the comfort of the house, there are just moments that make a difference (if you allow them to eliminate the buzz).  .

They aren’t big moments, or tiny moments, but they are everyday moments that always count. Here are some of ours!

It really was a Christmas card moment! (waiting for my pizza take-away)

burnout queens-january 2018

They’re our cute moment! (they don’t even try being cute, just are)

burnout queens-january 2018

burnout queens-january 2018

Walkie moments! (nothing better than bells at high noon on the high street clock, and babbling waters in the riverside café)

burnout queens-january 2018

Don’t forget the Art moments! (it was more about the architecture than the art)

burnout queens-january 2018

The town’s history moments! (1300 – 1500 and we wonder who stood here)

burnout queens-january 2018

New Year moment! (‘boys’ playing in the castle grounds, yikes one is our neighbour)

burnout queens-january 2018

None of these are big moments, but they definitely warm our heart, make us smile, inspire us, peak our curiosity, and just take us away from it all for a while.

Until next month, wishing you meaningful ‘moments’ too!

Love,

Hello from Lewes & London! 9 December 2017

Hello from London & Lewes

November just flew past and here we are on the countdown to the Festive Season!  I cannot believe that our next issue will be coming to you in 2018 (can you imagine that).

This edition has the Holiday Ho, Ho theme. This isn’t the happiest of times for The Burnout Queens, but we make every effort to bring joy through beauty and creativity in small everyday ways.  That said, London’s Piccadilly and Bond Streets always fit the brief (and are delightful and free if you keep your wallet in your handbag)!

Fortnum & Mason department store never disappoints. From the moment the doorman opens the doors (yes they have uniformed doormen), we are transported into a bedazzling holiday experience, from specialty foods to tree decorations galore.

And the tree decorations didn’t stop at little soldiers, reindeers and baubles…no F&M’s tea theme was over the top (and you know The Burnout Queens and tea)!

And then there is always the scrumptious Jellied section that I can never resist visiting any time of year (yes Santa, you can really eat these sugar plum delights).

A quick walk up to Bond Street (as you do) and Ralph Lauren’s windows stopped us in our tracks. The best subtle creativity of brand we’ve seen since arriving eight Christmas’s ago.

Alas, all sparkly visits must come to an end, but not before walking back to the train through a beautifully decorated ‘arcade’.  Just makes our day in London complete.

Even in our little town there are sweet and quirky ways to celebrate the countdown…and this is our excuse to always stop for tea, pastry and a friendly chat at our favourite little ‘tea shop’ (Lewes Patisserie).

This weekend we’ll be putting up the window and tree decorations. Don’t know about you, but it can be a stressful event.  Me thinks it wise to return to Lewes Patisserie to clear the head (another great excuse).

To all our Holiday Angels, we hope you find Beauty.

Peace & Love xx
