Hello from London… November 1

Hello from London!

It is impossible to believe that it is the first of November! Mainly because the weather here has been absolutely fabulous; sunny, mild, slightly breezy. Just today we were out walking with only sweaters on and it was hot! Now if Mother Nature would only serve up the whole winter like this, perfection!

It’s been a busy month work wise, designing and writing new classes and programmes, presenting Masterclasses and keeping up with clients. We’re also about to start blogging for the Huffington Post so we will let you all know where you can find that very soon. We are super chuffed about this!

Blood Swept Land and Seas of Red. There has been a very special art installation happening at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. Here are a couple of pictures we took when we visited a couple of weeks ago. It truly takes your breath away, but the pics don’t do justice to the the vastness of it.

What you are looking at is a ‘sea’ of handmade red ceramic poppies filling the moat around the Tower of London. Designed and created by artists Tom Piper and Paul Cummins each poppy is unique and has been ‘planted’ in remembrance of someone who died during the Great War from the U.K. and other Commonwealth countries. By Remembrance Day there will be 900,000 poppies, just short of the 1.2 million who died. It truly is beautiful and moving. We love that each poppy is as unique as the soul that was lost.

That same day we traced some family roots by visiting the London street (Warwick Court) Toby’s Great Great Great (times many!) relative lived on in the late 1400s. Unfortunately the house would have been lost in the Great Fire of 1666, but what an amazing feeling to walk down the same street! We are very proud of Henry, physician to King James 1, President of the Royal College of Physicians for many years, and founder the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.

Then we headed back to the seaside, I guess we really do miss the ocean! The salt air was delicious and the weather cooperated fully! Dr. B decided to have a ‘boo’ out to sea!

Sometimes it pays to throw away the plan!

Hello from London!

Is it just us…or is time really going faster?!!!  September flew by with work being crazy busy.  The weather was brilliant here, hope you were as lucky and got to enjoy wonderful warm September days.  In fact, here is a pic of Dr B having a cuppa in the park on the very last day of September!  Who could ask for more?  Check out the beautiful background of  the formal gardens of Lauderdale House in Highgate.

Sometimes it pays to throw away the plan!  That is exactly what we did when we headed down to Brighton on the South Coast for the day.  You know us, upon arrival we headed for our favourite patisserie ‘Cocoa of Brighton’  and the lovely owner asked, “Have you been to Lewes yet?”  (said in his adorable french accent!)  Well we hadn’t so we went right back up the hill, got back onto a train and 7 minutes later we were in the most beautiful medieval city called Lewes.

We spent the day walking and wandering, up hills and down (once again apologies to our feet, bless them!) exploring winding tiny streets, quirky shops, amazing architecture, and, you know it, delicious cafes!  Then there is the Norman castle right smack in the middle of the City!  What a surprising day!

Enjoy the pics!

You know one of the things we love about living here is that every corner we turn around we can be surprised.  Check out The Burnout Queens Pinterest Board “Quirky in the City” and discover more of our crazy and delightful finds.

Hello from London!

Hello from London!

Wow, summer went by so fast. Autumn is definitely in the air in London. This summer was exceptionally hot and beautiful, but there are plenty of creative ways to cool off!

At the beautiful Victoria & Albert Museum you can enjoy the coolness of the courtyard with tea and strawberries & cream while you watch the adventurous amongst us ditch the clothes for some splashing around!

This is just the greatest place, everywhere you look there is beauty…even the cafeteria!

September brings a rush of art fairs and exhibits like the retrospective on the life of writer Virginia Woolf at the National Portrait Gallery. We couldn’t miss this opportunity and it was fascinating…and rather sad.

One of the coolest things about London is that even when you just have a bunch of errands to do you can head to someplace like Piccadilly to accomplish all. Certainly takes the boring out of errand day! We spend hours (with apologies to our feet) meandering through side streets and shopping arcades. Then happily land in an oasis of calm like St. James Square right in the middle of the mad-mix.

September always brings a sense of ‘newness’. Must be the many years of anticipating a new pencil box for school! Well we are busy here designing new classes and courses which will be available shortly online to all of you. (Watch for announcements.) Planning workshops we are being invited to give and in- between it all still dashing off to the seaside days out and of course…art fairs! Another invitation just arrived.

Enjoy your September!
