Burnout Pups

The Burnout Pups weekend wisdom. How to relax, reenergize, rejuvenate and enjoy life

It Ain’t Easy Being Short!

It certainly isn’t easy being short, especially these days.  You see we are experiencing a heatwave here in the UK and it’s going on, and on, and on, which means that every day the heat on the pavement keeps rising!  And that is exactly why when you are short like we are, you feel the heat on your feet pads and bellies Really Fast!  I’m sure if you are a dachsie you can relate, right?

So us ‘little critters’ have a BIG request for our dachsie-owners:

  1. Keep us inside most of the day while this heat is high (we can catch up on our barky walks later when it cools down).
  2. Don’t take us grocery shopping, leave us tied up on the street, walking the pavements, or on long walks as usual even in parks (it’s too hot to expect us to take 5 steps at a clip to your every one…we hate marathons and your belly doesn’t drag on the ground!).
  3. Don’t ever leave us in the car with the windows cracked while you pop into a shop (it only takes a minute for us to overheat or worse!)
  4. Leave us at home with lots of water and a floor blanket in the coolest part of the house (classical music on the radio is appreciated).

Most people think our owners fuss too much, but we’re glad because we don’t end up in the vet emergency with heat stroke, seizures, or burnt paws.

Here’s a special tip from The Burnout Pups that works like a charm.

Check out Easi-dri cooling coats and blankets (http://www.easidri.com). We don’t get any special reward points, compensation,  or treats for sharing this with you!  In the heat, we wear our coats with delight. They cool down our body temperature and we just love the wet-bathing-suit feel on our wire-hair and skin.  We think our picture says it all!

Bliss!

Repeat after us…”when it’s this HOT, HOT, HOT, keep us little shorties IN, IN, IN”.

With love and gratitude,

The Burnout Pups

Hello from Lewes & London! 3 March 2018

Hello from London & Lewes

It’s been so mild here in southern England that we were lulled into thinking spring was just around the corner.  As I sit here writing to you winter just snuck up and settled in with a bang.  Aptly named ‘the beast from the east’ it is bitterly cold, train passengers and motorists are stranded en route, and we have 10 severe weather warnings posted (Canada we are geographically as big in size as the province of B.C.) so the army and tractors are pitching in to rescue people.

What does this mean for The Burnout Queens and The Burnout Pups?  Let’s just say we are getting a lot of work done, drinking pots and pots of tea, baking and the pups (?) well, they are by our side sleeping cosily on their blankets.  These are the times we know we made a smart decision to work from home so we don’t have to brave the elements anymore.  Good planning The Burnout Queens!!!!!!

Whether you’re in the freeze, still stuck on the motorway or train, or warm in front of the fire, we hope this edition of Hello brings a bit of beauty and entertainment to you.  For those elsewhere in the world experiencing milder ‘climes’ enjoy as well.

Early February we bought a car (Dr B passed her UK drive test) so we bundled up the Burnout Pups and drove across town to Priory Park site of a 9th Century monastery.  Who walks their dogs amongst ruins built between 1078 and 1082 during the reign of Cluniac pope Gregory VII?   We do!  It’s fabulous and all four of us were excited to walk and learn as we went.  A definite walkie route is unanimously established (more in an upcoming extra edition of Hello).  Arrived home to two valentine’s day cards from Dog’s Trust pups to finish the outing properly.

Then came the first snowfall (thought we have dodged this moving from Canada, but no).  The street looked bleak, but I must admit the castle still looked pretty stunning, wouldn’t you agree?

Now the ‘beast from the east’ makes the pups hesitate before being taken outdoors for breaks.  Who wouldn’t if you had short legs, were slung low to the cold pavement and get hypothermia quickly!  The pleading eyes are a killer, but the youngest gets excited to romp, especially when wearing her pink fleece sweater and matching neck scarf (she insists wearing it over her head like The Queen).  We swore we would never be these kind of dog owners, but…guilty!

Hope still springs eternal on market day with these inspirations.  And we admit there is always room in the freezer for a Victoria Sponge to get us through cold evenings.  However, this Valentine’s cake was too glorious to pass up (at least for a photo op).

Now that we have a car (aka ‘Flash’) you can bet we’ll be going further afield to explore, walk and just enjoy this beautiful countryside we live in.  Don’t worry you’ll have a front row seat for all our journeys…promise.

Until next month, get a good winter’s rest like this guy does.  This is his version of mindfulness… going, going, GONE!

Love from all of us!

Hello from Brighton & London!: 6 August 2016

Hello from London & Brighton

Well Darlings, July came and went without any fuss or bother!   Really, the Burnout Queens’ usual trips were cancelled due to the train strikes, slowdowns, overcrowding, and track fires!   So we stayed seaside.

Although we love the ‘buzz’ of London, staying local and low-key nurtures the quiet-seeking side of our Highly Sensitive souls.

We’ve been keeping our noses deep down in work all month, so much so we’re growing roots! (humour inspired by local nature).  Don’t worry, the fruits of our labour will blossom shortly.  (That’s the last nature pun, promise!)

We do practice what we preach sometimes!  The Burnout Queens always take nourishment when and where we can grab it, especially on the roof terrace among the flowers in the blazing sun.

It’s never all work, no play for us.  We will stop and take in the latest West End theatre production when it arrives.  It’s a fab way to leave work behind for a few hours.  This month it was ‘After Miss Julie’ a dark drama with actress Helen George (Call the Midwife).

And everything is more exciting under a full moon, especially when it hovers over The Channel right outside our terrace!

We’re looking ahead to a special stay-cation (relatives coming to stay) with day trips to new and never-before-seen villages and castles along the coastline.  Can’t wait (fingers crossed the trains aren’t striking or we’ll be forced to shop, shop, shop and have lots and lots of tea and cake).

Till next month from the coastal seaside and London…or who knows where (complete with pictures) enjoy your month.

Love,

Love, Dr Toby & Dr Bev xx
